- BEN YOUSSEF MADRASA
Utilized as an Islamic college until 1960, The Ben Youssef Madrasa is the Largest Madrasa in Morrocco. It was designed in the 14th century and was expanded over time. Housing more than 900 students with a cramped 130 student dormitory cell, the college was known to be one of the more renowned theological colleges in its prime. Visit this historical landmark and envision the tradition of Theology that has graduated centuries of scholars. The beauty of the interior wields decorations of intimate and amazing designs that capture eyes from all over the world.
The Madrasa was closed down for renovation in 2018. However, it will be reopened in 2020 daily from 9 am to 5 pm.
- THE MEDINA
This ancient section of Marrakech is a must-see when traveling to Morocco. The historic walls hold over 20 huge gates completed with a plethora of mosques and palaces for your eyes to wander for days. The Ben Youssef Madrasa is one of the wonderful landmarks that you can get lost in this wonderful Medina. This as well as the Koutoubia Mosque is just a couple of ancient sites to see. The Medina is a cultural masterpiece with ancient secrets and trades that teach you a myriad of historic knowledge about Marrakech and Morrocco.
- KOUTOUBIA MOSQUE
Designed
as the largest Mosque in Marrakech along with its wonderous minaret. This is a
mosque you do not want to miss while visiting
Marrakech. Decorated with curved windows
along with a ceramic strip. This is in combination with pointed merlons
and decorative arches. Lit up at night to force your eyes to dilate.
Unfortunately, those who are not of the Muslim faith are not allowed within its
walls. This is a sacred fixture that is a landmark in the old medina. Between
the hours of 9 am and 6 pm, visitors may see the mosque for a fee. Don’t let
that deter you from seeing the mosque, however.
- SAADIAN TOMBS
These historic landmarks were deliberately hidden for centuries until recently discovered in 1917. they were sealed off after the fall of the Saadi dynasty. Of those buried are Ahmed
el-Mansour’s father, Mohammed ash-Sheikh, who was murdered in 1557. el-Mansour also built two marvelous mausoleums for his kin. The hall of Twelve columns is the title of his mausoleum. Built from imported Italian Carrara marble, along with gilding honeycomb muqarnas. This is a gold decorated means of vaulting. He shares this mausoleum with some of his closest family.
The rich history involved in these tombs goes centuries-long in lore. Be sure to visit these recently discovered tombs in your stay.
- EL BADI PALACE
This historical landmark is popular for those visiting Marrakech. It has weathered the storm poorly over time. However, It still stands and presents valuable history to Moroccan culture. The travel back in time is still filled with wonders and magical thoughts to be conjured. The palace was built in the late 1570s, by order of Ahmed el-Mansour. 25 years of construction and centuries standing, the test of time has created a legend of this building that has tales to come for lifetimes. Be sure to see this marvel while visiting Marrakech.
- Tanneries
Ever wondered how a handbag was made? This is where you’d want to go. The tanneries are a site to see while visiting Marrakech. That is if you can get over the horrid scent. The processing of the skins combined with the chemicals within the tanneries brings about a scent unbearable at times. However the visual of the amazing tanneries and how certain articles are made is worth the sight. The large urns in which animal skins are placed in to be processed into various objects are impressive. While taking a tour, a guide should provide you with a cloth to cover your nose. Don’t be afraid to visit this important piece of Moroccan culture!
- Menara Gardens
Created in the middle 12th century during the Almohad dynasty, this beautiful garden is another piece of Moroccan history that is dying to be shared with the world. It is used as a basis for the designs of the Agdal Gardens in Rabat as well. The myriad of lanes delivers a long moment of shade and relaxation. This in combination with a direct view of the Koutoubia Mosque in the far distance. A peaceful afternoon stroll is paramount for this visit to the Menara Gardens, it also has less European visitors so you can achieve a full Moroccan experience while there.
- Musée Dar Si Saïd
Resembling much of the agriculture of the local arts in
the early 19th century, this establishment is a beautiful rendition of Moroccan
tradition. Ordered by Si said Ben Moussa. Nowadays this residence is a museum
that hosts wonderful art testifying to Marrakech folk art. It also holds the
alternative name the Museum of Moroccan Arts. It is an enormous palace with two floors and a plethora of patios to boot.
